3 Percent. That's the average annual salary increase in America. The average annual salary in America is $56k. So if you work really hard this year, next year you could make a whopping $58,000. And yet so often we accept these terms.
When I signed my teaching contract in Florida in 2007, I think I was making a whopping $37,000 with a Master's Degree. If I taught in that district for 25 years , I knew I could max out at $55,000 (I believe). WOW, I was soooo pumped! $55k sounded like SO MUCH MONEY to only work 196 days a year doing something I loved.
When I started working at the Waffle House, I started at $48,000. Their career progression says by year 7 you COULD make $100k as a division manager, at the end of a 25 year year career you could make $500k as an EVP. Again, I was excited about the possibilities.
You probably have a similar story.
Yet some how we put all this pressure on ourselves to hit 10k months and six figure years OVERNIGHT. We think we're some kind of failure if we don't create that instant success.
Let go of your timeline. WAIT. What if it took you 2 years to hit $100k? What if you didn't get to $500k until year 15. Would you keep showing up? I sure hope so! Putting all this pressure on yourself to create overnight success isn't serving you, isn't serving your business and isn't serving your clients. Running a business is complex - you have to master the skill or service you're offering, learn sales, learn marketing, learn mindset - it doesn't just happen overnight.
Keep showing up. Keep showing up. Keep showing up. Growing at any rate greater than 3% is a win to me 😜
