That little dude on my hip is who I started my business for, he's almost 3 now!
I started my VA business while i was on maternity leave from Waffle House - I had a newborn at home and a 14 month old. I was DESPERATE to build a business that not only made serious cash, but also provided me with the opportunity to be super present.
I envisioned slow mornings, serving my sweet bebes breakfast, taking cuddle breaks and always having time to laugh, sing or kiss a boo-boo. At the same time, I envisioned a booked out business full of clients who LOVED that I was a Mama, bringing in more money than I did at my prestigious VP position.
And you know what I did? I create a business that looked EXACTLY like that. You can too! I said no to everything that wasn't in alignment with that. I didn't want to feel guilty for going to preschool drop off, I didn't want a pit in my stomach when the kids were crying while I was on a Zoom call.
I know you’re building that business at home. A home where kids live.
You don’t have to be JUST a Mama. You are MORE than a Mama. You don’t have to be JUST a business owner. You are more than a CEO. You get to be both.
It’s okay to show up with kids in the background, in fact, I want you to. Because here’s the thing, until we normalize Moms being Moms and Moms being Bosses – NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE. You shouldn’t apologize for not having a silent background – it’s okay if your kids make noise or need a butt wiped or want a snack – this is our reality!
If you are working with a client who makes you feel guilty for Mama’ing or gives you anxiety on Zoom, have the conversation. If it continues – they do not need to be a long term client! NO ONE should shame you for being a badass raising babies and building a business. You get to be both, you ARE both.
